Three Years into the Ukraine War… The World Pays the Price of a War of Attrition

Has the time not come for the machinery of war and killing to stop? It is a question that imposes itself on the anniversary that reshaped the maps of power and opened the door to a prolonged war of attrition that has spared neither states, economies, nor global security.
At dawn on February 24, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced what he called a “special military operation” in Ukraine, launching a war that many in Europe had, only days earlier, deemed unlikely. Within hours, explosions echoed from east to west as Russian forces advanced by land and air from multiple axes, through Belarus and the Crimean Peninsula, in a scene that closed one chapter and opened another under the title of attrition.
This war is no longer a border confrontation; it has evolved into a clash of international wills, where military strategies intersect with economic warfare, energy battles, and food security crises. Three years on, there is neither a clear victor nor a defeated party—only a more divided and tense world, with open fronts stretching from Europe to the Middle East.
The key lesson is that modern wars are not quickly decided, and their cost extends far beyond the battlefield to the stability of states and the fate of peoples. The real bet today is on a moment of international rationality that restores the primacy of political solutions before the flames spread even further.
